Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for a Safety Manager.

 

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Safety Manager to join our Advanced Light Source (ALS) team at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. This is a senior management role that reports to the ALS Director and oversees all safety matters at the Facility, ensuring that Integrated Safety Management (ISM) is incorporated in all aspects of work which includes radiological, biological, chemical, occupational, and electrical safety. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Accelerator Safety and associated reviews. As the ALS Safety Manager, you will lead and implement rigorous safety standards across a diverse range of research disciplines, fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performing environment for ALS staff, users, and collaborators.


The Advanced Light Source, an accelerator ring-based synchrotron light source, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,500 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft X-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art X-ray capabilities. What You Will Do:

  • Manage the ALS Accelerator and Facility Safety Program: Ensure compliance with DOE Order 420.2D and the requirements of the LBNL Accelerator Safety Program, maintaining high standards for ALS accelerator and facility operations and research safety.
  • Serve as a Key Safety Leader: Act as the ALS spokesperson on all outside and institutional reviews or audits involving safety processes, representing a commitment to high standards.
  • Integrate Safety into ALS Culture: Lead the division’s efforts to embed health, safety, and environmental best practices, fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and psychological safety for a diverse and multidisciplinary community.
  • Manage Safety Programs and Protocols: Direct ALS’s comprehensive safety program, incorporating Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles across all work planning processes for staff and Users.
  • Collaborate Across Divisions: Work closely with the ALS-U and other divisions to ensure safety requirements and expectations are consistently met.
  • Drive Incident Review and Risk Assessment: Conduct hazard evaluations for various work scenarios, manage incident reviews, and perform causal analyses to develop corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
  • Supervise and Support Specialist Teams: Lead a small team of safety specialists, providing the resources and expertise necessary to ensure ALS’s safety protocols are top-notch.

 

What is Required:

  • Advanced Education and Research Experience: Ph.D., preferably in a scientific discipline or equivalent work experience, with extensive experience in a research environment.
  • Experience in Safety Programs for Federal or DOE Environments: Proven background in managing safety programs within DOE or similar federal agencies, with diverse expertise spanning multiple safety areas such as radiological, chemical, electrical, biological or industrial.
  • Leadership in Safety Management: Demonstrated leadership and established experience in overseeing safety management, including incident reviews, causal analysis, and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • People and Program Management: Skilled in managing teams and safety programs, with a focus on organizational priorities and safety objectives. Proven ability to communicate effectively with scientific and technical staff from diverse geographic and professional backgrounds.
  • Day-to-Day Safety Management and Risk Assessment: Experience overseeing daily safety operations in a research setting, including performing hazard evaluations, selecting appropriate mitigating controls, and conducting comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Technical Proficiency in Safety Protocols: In-depth knowledge of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles and the ability to apply these in assisting management in developing a robust safety culture environment.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Exceptional communication skills to work effectively across diverse teams, including scientific and technical staff, and to engage a wide range of stakeholders in maintaining a safe, collaborative environment.
  • Technical Writing and Documentation: Proficient in technical writing related to safety issues, including drafting procedures, conducting incident reviews, and documenting lessons learned.
  • Organizational and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated problem-solving abilities to anticipate and resolve complex safety challenges, with a proactive approach to planning and objective-setting.
  • Analytical and Initiative-Driven Approach: Proven analytical skills and initiative to assess, identify, and address safety needs and develop strategic plans to achieve safety objectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with safety management for large DOE projects or in other complex construction environments.
  • Work Planning and Control (WPC) experience for work authorization.
  • Certifications such as CIH, CSP, or CHP are beneficial but not required.
  • Previous work in DOE accelerator complexes as either staff or as a User.
  • Experience with Accelerator Safety and related regulatory compliance and reviews.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $221,616.00- $277,020.00, which fits within the full salary range of $221,616.00-$373,968.00 for the H00.6. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
