Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team.

In this role, you will work with the Grid Integration Group, the Grid Planning and Economics team develops models and software solutions to support decisions around power systems planning, economics as well as electricity markets and policy.

You will apply scientific and engineering concepts to develop, implement and analyze power system simulation and optimization models in the context of planning and economic operation of distribution grids. This position will require both power systems engineering and power system economic analysis skills.

What You Will Do:

  • Implement and run power  grid models in the context of different system planning, economics and policy applications. 
  • Develop and compare different methodologies for assessing distribution system costs under future decarbonization scenarios. 
  • Develop algorithms to run and analyze techno-economic results.
  • Collaborate in tool development for various power system economic applications. 
  • Provide resolution to technical problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.

What is Required:

  • Knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor’s in power systems engineering, physics, or a related field or equivalent education with extensive professional technical experience or additional education related to the position duties, typically minimum 2 years.
  • Knowledge of distribution system planning. 
  • Understanding of power systems physics and distributed energy resources (DERs) modeling.
  • Knowledge of optimization techniques for the integration of DERs.
  • Experience coding in Python, namely in the following packages: Pyomo, Pandas.
  • Experience in cost-assessment and policy application methodologies. 
  • Broad understanding of power system economics and regulation.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise technical staff in individual and team-based projects of increasing complexity. 
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to respond to short-term client needs, work with members of project teams, and collaborate with industry and international experts. 
  • Ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary environment and to coordinate/collaborate successfully with colleagues and others from a diversity of fields. 
  • Ability to work effectively with groups or independently. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively, providing, sharing and receiving creative ideas.

  • This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range for this position is $80,784.00-$136,368.00. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,965.20-$106,066.80. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
