Berkeley Lab is hiring a Senior Electronics Engineering Technologist to provide advanced technical support in electronics. Reporting to the Electronics Technology manager, the role involves designing, developing, testing, evaluating, debugging, and maintaining complex electronics and systems, requiring expertise in technology, scientific principles, and mathematics.

 

What You Will Do:

65% Electronics Systems Hands-on Specialist

  • Collaborate with users to develop electronics system projects and technical plans.
  • Diagnose and repair complex equipment malfunctions using advanced technical skills.
  • Develop test procedures, analyze performance, and create diagnostics applying scientific principles and mathematics.
  • Participate in engineering design changes for experimental circuitry, systems, or prototypes.
  • Create sketches, drawings, and procedures for research experiments and tests.
  • Write or interpret specifications for electronic equipment/system design, maintenance, and calibration.

35% General Electronics Support

  • Plan and organize project support, including coordination with the Machine Shop.
  • Handle purchasing and Bill of Materials (BOM).

 

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Train less experienced staff on complex circuit analysis, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration.
  • Lead small teams on specific tasks or projects.

 

What is Required:

  • Minimum 6+ years of related experience.
  • Advanced understanding of electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computer theory, scientific principles, and mathematics.
  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics.
  • Ability to apply technical creativity, expertise, and judgment to complete tasks independently.
  • Proficient with complex test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, Hi-potters, power meters) and tools.
  • Skilled in writing/interpreting tests, assembly, calibration, and maintenance procedures.
  • General knowledge of engineering design and test documentation.
  • Adequate color vision for wiring codes and safety indicators.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS/AA in Electronics Engineering, FCC GROL, CET, SBE certification, or equivalent military/industrial training.
  • Proficient in computer-aided electronics drafting (e.g., Visio, OmniGraffle).
  • Skilled with PC applications (spreadsheets, databases, word processors, graphics).
  • Strong planning, teaching, organizing, and writing abilities.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The hourly range for this position is $48.02 - $69.63 per hour. The hourly rate will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
