Swing Shift Custodian
Berkeley Lab is hiring a Swing Shift Custodian to join the team. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean and orderly premises and work areas. Most tasks are performed under direct supervision with clear expectations of outcomes. The role involves selecting the appropriate methods, procedures, equipment, and materials best suited for each assigned task.
What You Will Do:
- Perform general custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, polishing floors, and operating floor equipment as needed.
- Clean walls, ceilings, windows, blinds, doors, and furniture; vacuum, shampoo, and spot-clean carpets and upholstery.
- Maintain restrooms, showers, and washrooms in a clean and sanitary condition, including restocking supplies.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles; perform special cleaning projects as assigned.
- Follow daily work schedules and instructions from supervisors or work leads.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety shoes at all times.
- Work safely at all times; stop work if unsafe conditions arise and report hazards promptly.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including DOE, federal, state, and Lab-specific policies.
- Attend safety meetings and complete all required training on time.
- Plan and execute work with attention to safety, using the Integrated Safety Management System (ISM).
- Maintain regular attendance, arrive on time, and follow department call-in and leave procedures.
- Accurately complete and submit weekly timesheets in LETS by end of shift on Thursdays.
- Monitor Activity Manager notifications and ensure training compliance.
- Communicate any changes in schedule or work routine to supervisor or work lead.
- Follow Lab policies on cell phone use and scheduling time off (at least 24 hours in advance when possible).
- Demonstrate Berkeley Lab Stewardship Values: team science, service, trust, innovation, and respect.
- Comply with all LBNL policies and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities as Needed:
- Clean ductwork and pipe using mobile elevated work platforms; clean air diffuser.
What is Required:
- Relevant custodial experience through formal apprenticeship, vocational training, or equivalent work.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking); able to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and via two-way radio.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and comply with posted safety warnings.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication.
- Physically able to climb stairs/ladders, work at heights and in confined spaces, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Capable of standing for extended periods (up to 8 hours) and carrying objects up to 100 feet.
- Team player with experience in diverse environments and all organizational levels.
- Strong customer service and communication skills; promotes positive relationships.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving skills relevant to custodial tasks.
Desired Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and automobile
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
- Swing Shift Hours: 2pm - 10:30pm
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
- The salary range is $23.50 - $34.20/hour depending on the step you are hired at.
